This is a wonderful opportunity to spend the day learning how to work with silk, under the tuition of artist Sarah Moorcroft.

You can use a floral theme, or choose one of your own.

During the workshop you will learn the design process and practical application of silk painting.

This technique involves planning your design on paper and then transferring it to your silk, guttering up the design and then allowing it to dry.

You will then paint your silk, having learnt which colours work well together and how to apply them.

Foam Marbling with Rachel Cheer

One of our most popular workshop is back!

Foam Marbling, with Rachel Cheer, is all about introducing youngsters to art, and older children to a new way of creating unusual artwork, and of course letting adults have fun too!

Shaving Foam Marbling is a great way to experiment with creating colourful and unique images on paper; the workshop is for all abilities and ages.

Designed especially for parents/ carers and children to enjoy together, so bring the whole family/ team/ tribe and get stuck in!

Steam-Fix Silk Painting with Helen Mortimer

Learn the art of silk painting, using the steam-fixing method, with artist Helen Mortimer …
During the workshop, you will be using the technique of steam-fixing with silk dyes – giving your finished painting vibrant colours.

As well as stretching silk onto a frame, you will also learn how to use dyes & salt on your fabric.

You will then have the opportunity to create an initial piece, using a floral theme, or one of your own ideas.

Finally, you will design a landscape of your choice, ready to be steam-fixed.

Experimental Flowers in Watercolours with Isabel Carmona

Learn to be expressive with watercolour and try out various ways of approaching the beautiful subject of flowers, with artist Isabel Carmona

During this two-day workshop, you will experiment with markmaking, colour and layering of the paint. This is an exciting opportunity to explore different tools and ways of applying paint to paper.

No previous experience needed.

Design, Create & Frame for Adults with Bonni Southey

One day workshop.
Time: 10am to 2pm

Welcome to Bonni’s Art World!

Bonni says: “I am Bonni Southey -mother, health practitioner, teacher, truth activist, deep thinker, intuitive artist…….someone who loves to creatively transform people, places and situations, from imbalanced to balanced.
Trained initially as a fashion designer and illustrator, expressing a love of textiles and a ‘magpie’s eye’ – it is now the more therapeutic world of the healing potential of colour which tends to draw my professional interest.
This impulse gives birth to the ‘Design, Create, Frame Workshops’ which I facilitate. They are designed to unleash the creative potential within each of us and to nourish the soul.”

The workshops are fun, relaxed, empowering and bring a meditative qualityto the time spent creating the beautiful, finished artworks.

During the workshop you will plan your design, working with a wide range of materials and fabrics. You will then create your frame with Bonni’s guidance and tips for a great outcome.

Please feel free to bring along any special materials/ words you would like to add to your frame.

100 Canvases 2017 A City Arts Fundraiser

Welcome to our exciting fundraising project. We began our fundraising with an exciting project: 100 Canvases 2017 a community event for all ages and abilities.

We asked the community to helps us paint, exhibit and buy 100 canvases…

The ‘100 Canvases’ process was as follows:

Painting

  • Come and purchase a 30 x 30cm (12 x 12″) canvas from us for £5, on either Sat 28th or Sun 29th January
  • Create your design using any medium/technique on your own time (don’t sign them on the front!) and,

Donation

  • Deliver and donate your finished artwork to us, on either the Sat 11th or Sun 12th February (or by appointment with Isabel Carmona).

Collection and delivery are both from City Arts Newbury  from 10 am to 2pm

  • Or you can come and do the above with us, in situ on the Tuesday 14th February, at our Canvas Painting Workshop day, for the cost of the canvas (£5).
  • Workshop times are either 10am-12pm or 1pm-3pm

Exhibition

Following the collection of the canvases, we held a Fundraising  Exhibition Weekend on Sat 18th and Sun 19th February from 10am to 3pm, we displayed, for sale, all the canvases you donated and you were able to purchase any of the canvas too!

The exhibition was “blind” with no names of the artists displayed.
All proceeds of the exhibition went to the City Arts Building Renovation Fund

Christmas Fairs 26-27 Nov and 3-4 Dec

Two Weekend of Christmas Arts and Crafts Fairs at City Arts Newbury.

Dates are: 26th and 27 November 2016 and 3rd and 4th December

City Arts welcomes 30 artisans and artists over 2 weekends of Art Fairs.  The stalls change every weekend so you are advised to visit at least twice.

Stalls will sell from chocolates to ceramics, artisan soap to original printmaking, furniture to artwork of various media, local teas and many different types of handmade decorations.

This is an ideal opportunity to get that special, handmade, local present for a special loved one!

Artists participating include:

  • ceramicists Christine Lack and Lone Hudson, Sally Bettridge, Martin Eastabrook and Ursula Waechter;
  • printmakers Isabel Carmona, Rahima Kenner and Pam Hardman,
  • digital artist Ben Honisett,
  • photographers Debborah Taylor and Rachel Cheer,
  • silkpainting by Helen Mortimer and Rosemary Lawrey,
  • creative textiles by Christine Highnett,
  • meditation art by Sam Buller,
  • silkscreen artwork by Charlotte Adcock,
  • turned wood by Alan Hulford.

Local produce and crafts include:

  • chocolates by Chocolates by T,
  • locally sourced infusions by Verity Murricane,
  • soaps by Linda Marshman,
  • Christmas decorations by Melanie Brown, Pat Lawton and Alida Balaceanu,
  • cardmaking supplies by Sarah Douglas,
  • charity goods by Dorothy Aromando Art Fund.

Plus the City Arts Newbury stall with coffee and cakes and also delicious hot soup on sale.

Doors open each day from 11 am to 3pm.
