Layering Lino: Seedheads & Flowers with Karen Carter

Using the work of Angie Lewin as our inspiration we will produce layered prints in colour. We will use both a free-form approach and registration methods for more precise printing. We will work mainly with lino (A6 size) but also incorporate polystyrene plates and found textures as needed. There will be plenty of demos and individual help. Suitable for anyone with basic linocutting skills.

This year we will go for walks around Newbury and sketch on the way, stopping at various locations to draw/paint at different speeds.
Sketchbook and a materials kit provided.
Sessions will explore various local scenes (e.g. canal, town centre, high street) through the various sketching techniques.
Flora and Fauna Fused Glass with Nicky Clarke

Create a flora, fauna or woodland scene, using opaque and transparent glass frits, copper foils and wire. Your design will be initially drawn on paper, to scale, and then used for a guide to make your final piece. Your finished creation will be 17x12cms and will be taken away to be fired and then returned to City Arts within two weeks.

Intro to Pyrography on Wood with Naomi Lunn

Learn how to create a detailed drawing onto wood, using a pyrography tool to control depth, thickness of line and tonal depths of shading. Have fun creating a unique design, which can either become a framed piece or a wooden box to take home at the end of the session.

Marbling with inks is an exciting technique, which enables you to produce wonderful colours and patterns on good quality paper. Part of the fun is never knowing what you’re going to get and experimenting with lots of different marbling techniques! You will start by practising with a selection of A5 paper and then move onto A4 paper – once dried, they can be used to cover notepads, journals, frames and other craft items.

Make a set of simple clay figures suitable for indoor or outdoor use. We will be exploring facial expression, playing with form and discovering ways of adding details such as buttons, ears and pompoms. If you’re feeling adventurous you can turn some of your figures into plant waterers. They look great standing amongst the plants.

Explore a variety of different ways to introduce colour into your linoprinting. Produce a set of single and multi-colour prints in this structured but relaxed workshop exploring techniques such as spot inking, rainbow rolls, chine colle, stencils & masks etc. Feel free to bring existing plates or cut a new one during the workshop (tutor will supply A5 size lino). Suitable for anyone familiar with basic linocutting. Lots of step-by-step demos & individual help.

Where watercolour meets printmaking!
The easy way to do Japanese style woodcuts! We will take this ancient art and make it into something fun, accessible and simple to do, referencing the work of the Provincetown Printers in America.
All tools and wood will be provided and printing will be done with tubes of watercolour paints – perfect for printing at home with a minimum of equipment.

Spiral Tie-dye T-shirts with Wendy Lloyd

Make a super cool multi-coloured, spiral patterned tie-dye T-shirt. Learn about mixing dyes, to make a whole spectrum of colours so that every T-shirt is unique. You will tie and dye your t-shirt, then take it home to be rinsed the next day – once the dyes have set. Bring a washed white or pale coloured 100% cotton t-shirt and a bucket, washing up bowl or tub for taking it home safely. Everything else will be provided. Dress for mess!

Make a 10 cm x 10 cm glass tile with Nicky.
What will you create, a simple tree design, or an under water scene with fish and seaweed? Images for inspiration are available on the day but the choice is yours.
Once you have your design ready, you can create it using the glass frits and metals which will be glued in place, onto the glass, ready for firing.
Pieces will be taken away for firing and returned to city arts within two weeks for you to collect.

You’ll add features such as buttons and fingernails (without squashing all your other hard work). You’ll explore ways of creating an expressive face. And, if you have time after all that, you’ll be able to add colour too.

Bring along any special embellishments to personalise your creation: jewels, stickers, cars and so on. Lots of materials will be provided, including the toadstool/table and white paint to give it a base coat.
This workshop is the perfect project to do with your little and big ones.

Isabel is back, with her first course of the year – bringing her fun, challenging and unique style to this new 3 week course… a must for anyone who wants to give portraiture a go or advance their skills-base with an inspiring tutor!
Experiment with drawing each other portraits, self portraits and group portraits in various media (pencil, pen, ink, watercolour, biro) both monochrome and full colour. The course starts by looking at the proportions of the human face and will encourage participants to draw and paint without fear, having fun, whilst collecting it all in a sketchbook.
