This 5wk course is a fantastic opportunity for teens to explore specialist art mediums, have fun, explore unusual and exciting tools, equipment and techniques – which they may otherwise not have access to at school.

During each session, students will learn about the materials, techniques and processes of a variety of specialist subjects including:

Etching ~ Wet-Based Photography ~ Papercutting and Lino Cutting & Printing.

At the end of each two hour session, students will be able to take their artwork home, and by the end of the course, students will have gained a sense of confidence in themselves, expanded their art-base, created a portfolio of work and discovered beautiful, fun skills that can be transferred to their school and college work.

We’re very excited to introduce, our new 2019 Art Course for Kids with Sarah Moorcroft – taking place after school, over 5 weeks during term-time. Our beginner’s classes are suitable for children with an interest in all forms of art.
For NEW STUDENTS – Our sessions provide the opportunity to discover their artistic talent, indulge in their passion for art and explore their creative side.
For RETURNING STUDENTS – they will continue where they left off with Sarah. Developing their knowledge and skills-base, as well as being introduced to new techniques, including painting & drawing – using various mediums, from pencil and pastels, to watercolours and mixed media.

At City Arts, we keep our classes small and this allows our students to receive 1:1 guidance and support – tailored to their needs and focused on their progress.

Learn the theory behind making soft tones and zinging colour, why you might underpaint, and how to see colours within colours.

Louise Gunnersen, colourist and international artist, will guide you through a day of discovery. You will make a colour chart during the first half of the session and then use your knowledge to create a set of small studies.


Create Your Own Toadstool or Fairy Table with Sarah Moorcroft

Have some imaginative fun creating a mini world in the form of a toadstool or table.

Be it a dinosaur land, fairytale castle, racetrack, unicorn forest or an underwater world.

Bring along any special embellishments to personalise your creation: jewels, stickers, cars and so on. Lots of materials will be provided, including the toadstool/table and white paint to give it a base coat.

This workshop is the perfect project to do with your little and big ones.

All Levels Welcome – No Experience Necessary

In this workshop you’ll make a figure out of clay. You’ll take on the challenges posed by proportion and balance. You’ll add features such as buttons and fingernails (without squashing all your other hard work). You’ll explore ways of creating an expressive face. And, if you have time after all that, you’ll be able to add colour too.

Pieces will be taken away for firing and can be collected from City Arts Newbury at a later date.

This is a fun, hands-on session, where you and your child will have the opportunity to explore interesting tools and materials, including clay and plaster.

We will explore taking impressions with wooden stamps, plants, leaves, found objects and even our hands. The impressions will be turned into beautiful tiles for you to take home on the day. Be prepared to get messy and have fun!

Donna’s very popular Manga Poster Day is back for 2019!

During the day, we will cover traditional Manga drawing techniques, focusing on facial features, clothing, props and backgrounds.

Having learnt the basics and planned their design in the morning, students will then spend the afternoon producing their A3 poster. There will be lots of step-by-step instructions, and useful tips on how to create your manga characters and setting.

Make a super cool multi-coloured, spiral patterned tie-dye T-shirt. Learn about mixing dyes, to make a whole spectrum of colours so that every T-shirt is unique. You will tie and dye your t-shirt, then take it home to be rinsed the next day – once the dyes have set. Bring a washed white or pale coloured 100% cotton t-shirt and a bucket, washing up bowl or tub for taking it home safely. Everything else will be provided. Dress for mess!

Come and learn how to make a book using rainbow paper and bamboo sticks for the spine! You’ll be given step-by-step help on how to fold and cut your rainbow paper and thread your bamboo sticks – creating a brilliant book that can be used for all sorts of activities. Once your book is filled, you can then add more pages, just use the technique you’ve been taught – or start a new book!

Come and join Maria for an out-of-this-world experience! A fun and creative Easter workshop for children and adults to do together. During this session you will learn how to make a lovely mobile on which you will hang the moon, the sun and five of our major planets!

This is a family activity, so little ones will need some help from an adult, and older ones can created this fab hanging galaxy themselves.

Donna’s very popular Manga Drawing Course is back for 2019!

This five-week course will cover Manga drawing, techniques and specialist drawing equipment. Each week, we will focus on different characters, their features, clothes and props.

For New Students, you will be taught the foundation skills of drawing Manga characters, features and clothing.

For Returning Students, you will continue to develop what you’ve learnt with Donna, so far, and build on your skills to further improve your drawing, using source material and your imagination.

Each week, a new theme will be introduced to build on what was learnt in the previous session. Students will receive group and 1:1 tuition and feedback, with peer support being an integral part of this course.

Marbling with inks is an exciting technique, which enables you to produce wonderful colours and patterns on good quality paper. Part of the fun is never knowing what you’re going to get and experimenting with lots of different marbling techniques! You will start by practising with a selection of A5 paper and then move onto A4 paper – once dried, they can be used to cover notepads, journals, frames and other craft items.
