30 May, 6, 13, 27 June, 4 & 11 July 2017 10 am to 12:30 pm for six days

Each day we will explore one medium in earnest: pencil, charcoal, drawing pen, ink pen, biro, colour pencil. Practice working with line and tone, hatch or scribble. A fun, practical workshop for those who want to have a go with normal drawing tools and do more. You will receive a sketchbook to collect your drawings and other materials needed will be provided for the class

Find different ways of portraying people, ourselves or others, in various media:pen, pencil, watercolour, marker pen. Lose the fear of not doing it right. We will seek expression, fun, loose lines, tone and colour. You will receive a sketchbook to collect your portraits and other materials needed will be provided for the class

3, 10, 17, 24 June & 1 July 2017

10 am to 12:30 pm – for five sessions

£100 (£80 concessions)


A five week course covering Manga drawing, techniques and pens. This course is designed for beginners and children with experience of drawing Manga. Each week, we will focus on different features and characters, and then apply these to your work-in-progress. In the final week you will create a cartoon storyboard, using all of the elements and skills you have acquired during the course

A three day exciting and dynamic workshop, in which you will write poems based on your own ideas, make Concertina and Japanese bound books and decorate them, and create linocuts to illustrate the poems in your book.

You then get to take away your own “Poetry in Print”.

All materials provided. Bring your own love of words.

Father’s Day Canvas with Sarah Moorcroft

Christmas Fairs 26-27 Nov and 3-4 Dec

Two Weekend of Christmas Arts and Crafts Fairs at City Arts Newbury.

Dates are: 26th and 27 November 2016 and 3rd and 4th December

City Arts welcomes 30 artisans and artists over 2 weekends of Art Fairs.  The stalls change every weekend so you are advised to visit at least twice.

Stalls will sell from chocolates to ceramics, artisan soap to original printmaking, furniture to artwork of various media, local teas and many different types of handmade decorations.

This is an ideal opportunity to get that special, handmade, local present for a special loved one!

Artists participating include:

  • ceramicists Christine Lack and Lone Hudson, Sally Bettridge, Martin Eastabrook and Ursula Waechter;
  • printmakers Isabel Carmona, Rahima Kenner and Pam Hardman,
  • digital artist Ben Honisett,
  • photographers Debborah Taylor and Rachel Cheer,
  • silkpainting by Helen Mortimer and Rosemary Lawrey,
  • creative textiles by Christine Highnett,
  • meditation art by Sam Buller,
  • silkscreen artwork by Charlotte Adcock,
  • turned wood by Alan Hulford.

Local produce and crafts include:

  • chocolates by Chocolates by T,
  • locally sourced infusions by Verity Murricane,
  • soaps by Linda Marshman,
  • Christmas decorations by Melanie Brown, Pat Lawton and Alida Balaceanu,
  • cardmaking supplies by Sarah Douglas,
  • charity goods by Dorothy Aromando Art Fund.

Plus the City Arts Newbury stall with coffee and cakes and also delicious hot soup on sale.

Doors open each day from 11 am to 3pm.

Printfest 2016

City Arts Presents: Printfest 2016

A whole day of printing techniques, with Four Artists demonstrating and teaching all ages…

You will have the opportunity to learn how to Design & Print using a variety of printing techniques, including:

~ Marbling
~ Stenciling
~ Transfers

You will be printing onto a variety of materials, including:

~ Different Papers & Card
~ Draw-string Bags
~ Cotton Pencil Cases
~ T-shirts

Home is – Sculpture Workshop with Jennifer Forakis

We are very excited about this upcoming event!!

Architect Jennifer Forakis will be spending the day teaching a Sculpture Workshop.

The theme is Home is… and the sculptures will be informed by your idea of what shelter means to you.

1. Learn – ‘Home Is…’ …. shelter, safety etc.
2. Structure – Consider what a strong structure might be, build using cups, canes etc.
3. Function – Consider materials, are they waterproof, do you need windows, doors etc.
4. Identity – Make each ‘home’ unique to each person… decorate etc.
5. Community – Add each ‘home’ to the commuity.

You will be working as a team and building your structure using:
~ Bamboo
~ Plastic
~ Paper Cups
~ Rubber Bands

~ Age: Adults, Teens & Children 5yrs+
~ Cost: £5 each (for the whole day)

Photography Workshop with Giles Penfound

City Arts Presents:

A day-long workshop with Professional Photographer Giles Penfound.

Attendees will spend the day studying photographic techniques, taking photographs, editing & critiquing them as a group. You will be given themes to work to and hands-on support whilst shooting in public.

At the end of the day, there will be a competition; the best photo will be chosen by the group, and Giles will have the final vote. The winner will then have their photo printed and framed by Giles.

Age: 18yrs+
