City Arts Presents: Day of the Dead 2018

Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th October, 10am – 4pm

Join us for a sensational Dia de los Muertos weekend, celebrating the traditions of this fascinating and beautiful Mexican festival. Feel free to dress up in traditional Dia de los Muertos costume!

There will be traditional food and music, kid’s activities and storytelling. We will have a cafe area, where people can relax and enjoy our gorgeous, homemade Chilli (meat & veggie) and traditional Bolilla rolls – all in aid of our Fundraising Renovation Project.

On Saturday and Sunday, City Arts will unveil their incredible Day of the Dead set, hand built by children, attending the ‘Set Design Workshop’ with Donna Lewis (see event page or programme pg23).

Colour Drawing & Painting 5wk Course with Isabel Carmona

Mondays: 1, 8, 15, 29 October & 5 November, 10am – 12.30pm

In each session we will explore one medium of drawing and painting in earnest: biro, colour pencils, watercolours, watercolour pencils, felt tip pens.

We will learn about observation, colour mixing and layering. A fun practical workshop for those who want to try various drawing techniques and do more. 

You will receive a sketchbook to collect your drawings and other
materials needed for the class.

Soft Pastels with Louise Gunnersen

Discover the beautifully, soft blended colour of chalk pastels with artist Louise Gunnersen. 

During the workshop, you will use a good quality pastel paper and work from either your imagination, or a landscape or seascape picture.

Explore, experiment and learn how to use this versatile material, whilst applying various drawing techniques to your image. 

All materials are included, however, you may want to bring your own image to work from, as well as your favourite pastels.

City Arts Presents: Applefest 2018

Applefest is returning for its 3rd year, and we want to continue to celebrate this very apple-y community surrounding us.

Bring your unwanted apples down to City Arts, and we’ll convert them into 100% pure, City Arts Apple Juice – which is then sold, throughout the year, as part of our Fundraising Project.

This years Applefest sees a number of activities taking place through the day including:

**Glass Fusing Drop-in Session with Nicky Clarke**

Make a fused glass tile with Nicky Clarke. Design your clear glass tile using copper wire detail, and coloured with different sized glass frits. Once made, the tiles will need to be kiln-fired, and returned to City Arts for collection within two weeks.

Drypoint Etching without a Press with Karen Carter

Friday 12th October, 10am – 4pm

Have a go at low-tech drypoint etching… printing without a press or chemicals!

From your initial drawings we will scratch the images into acetate and perspex to create permanent plates – these will be inked up in a variety of ways using water-soluble sticks and inks then a print taken from them by hand. 

This is a process you can easily replicate at home with a minimum of specialist equipment. 

No experience needed – lots of step-by-step demos. A fun creative day suitable for complete beginners and those wanting to refresh their skills.

Monoprinting on Fabric with Wendy Lloyd

Learn how to make unique prints, using a wide variety of monoprinting techniques with Wendy Lloyd.
 
No prior experience is necessary.
 
We will use various mark-making techniques plus found, homemade and commercial stamps and stencils, as well as jelly and hard plates, to make your prints.
 
The results can be as subtle or vibrant as you choose.
 
You will have 2 square metres of fabric plus paper and tissue to print with, so you will go home with an arm full of prints to frame, embroider or use for collage and card making.

3D Layered Papercuts with Pie Lady (Adriana Roberts)

Sunday 14th October, 10am – 4pm

This is an amazing 3D papercutting workshop, where you’ll learn lots of techniques, and focus on layering papercuts and framing. You will receive lots of advice, tips and tricks of the trade from Pie Lady, in a friendly and fun atmosphere.

You don’t need to be an expert paper-cutter to take part, just enthusiastic – whilst we share a cuppa, biscuits and cake! 

You will be given a kit with everything you need, including: 
~ a craft knife
~ cutting mat
~ white and coloured paper
~ your choice of 3D template
~ a frame for your own amazing, layered masterpiece
