Applefest 2017

Sunday 15th October – Apple-pressing & Drop-off Day, 10am – 3pm

Sunday 22nd October – Apple Drop-off only, 10am – 1pm

Tuesday 24th & Wednesday 25th October – Apple Collage Days, 10am – 3pm

We want to celebrate this very apple-y community surrounding us.

During this FREE activity day, we will be serving lots of scrummy apple bakes and cakes, along with a lovely, hot tea or coffee!

Then you and the kids can get stuck in with the apple-themed activities:

~ Chopping & Scratting ~
~ Pressing & Tasting ~

Don’t forget to bring your unwanted apples to City Arts, we will then convert them into 100% pure City Arts Apple Juice, to sell throughout the year.

**Your apple donation helps us raise funds for our building renovation and low cost community activities**

!We want to beat the 200kg from last year!

Did you know: almost 80% of apples, from domestic apple trees, lie unused or go to waste?

Our annual two weekends of Christmas Fairs, where local artists, craft people and traders will show and sell a variety of unique work including:

Silk Painting, Jewellery, Ceramics, Painting, Original Prints, Christmas Decorations, Preserves, Photography, Cards and much more.

A Portrait of Newbury

Monday 4th September, 10am – 3pm

City Arts invites you to create a community ‘Portrait of Newbury’

This event is for everyone – all ages & all abilities

Come and draw people, each other, your family and friends – using a variety of mediums, with a broad range of surfaces:

Continuous paper
Canvas
Cardboard

Pens, pencils, coloured pencils and crayons will be provided.

We will also be creating ‘Graffiti Portraits’ with pens on canvas!!!

Tables will be laid out across the Market Square, with a giant roll of paper across it.

~ Urban Sketchers, bring your sketch pads/ easels/ and comfy chairs – join us and share your work at the end ~

**1 Minute Portraits for £1**
Artist, Isabel Carmona will be offering her fun 1 minute portraits – a fab memory of the day, to take home with you!

Mandala Day 

Saturday 22nd July, 10am – 3pm

New Collage 2

Mandala Day is a celebration of the Buddhist and Hindu spiritual symbol for the universe.

This is a community-led event for all the family, using a mixture of mandala designs. We will be planning, designing and then painting part of the floor and wall at City Arts.

So, bring the family along for a great day at City Arts – designing and creating a beautiful mandala.

We will be using the work of artist Suzan Drummen as inspiration for our design, check out her page: http://www.suzandrummen.nl/

For the third year running, City Arts is bringing its Free, Community Event, for all the family, to the heart of Newbury.

Chalkfest is for the whole family – it’s all about joining in, having fun and getting creative with chalk!!!

For those who cannot sit on the floor, tables will be provided.

Poetry in Print: Three Day Workshop with Donna Lewis & Isabel Carmona

~ Friday 7th July, 6.30pm – 8.30pm

 

~ Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th July, 10am – 4.30pm

 

A three day unique, challenging and dynamic workshop, with Donna Lewis & Isabel Carmona…

 

Day One: POETRY: The poetry session is in the evening 6.30pm – 8.30pm.
We will write poems based on our own ideas, shared thoughts and discussions – using a variety of topics for inspiration. You can also use the words of other poets.

Day Two: LINO: plan and create linocuts to illustrate your book and cover. You will recieve step-by-step guidance from the tutors on how to cut the lino, which tools create which mark and how to get the most out of your designs.

Day Three: BOOK BINDING: design and make two books:

~ Concertina Style & Japanese Binding

You will be using a variety of papers for your book block. There will also be specialist papers available for your covers, or you can design you rown cover using a lino-stamp you make during the session.

It’s then time to add your poetry to your handmade books!

At the end of the third day you will take home your ‘Poetry in Print’

Foam Marbling with Rachel Cheer

One of our most popular workshop is back!

Foam Marbling, with Rachel Cheer, is all about introducing youngsters to art, and older children to a new way of creating unusual artwork, and of course letting adults have fun too!

Shaving Foam Marbling is a great way to experiment with creating colourful and unique images on paper; the workshop is for all abilities and ages.

Designed especially for parents/ carers and children to enjoy together, so bring the whole family/ team/ tribe and get stuck in!

This 6 week drawing course, with artist Isabel Carmona is for beginners and people with drawing experience…
Each session we will explore one medium in earnest:

Practice working with line and tone, hatch or scribble.
A fun, practical workshop for those who want to have a go with normal drawing tools and do more.

Join Artist Isabel Carmona for this relaxed and fun 6wk course, exploring the many ways you can create a portrait.

Find different ways of portraying people, ourselves or others, using various media including:

Lose the fear of not doing it right. We will seek expression, fun, loose lines, tone and colour.

Manga Drawing for Kids: 5wk Course with Donna Lewis

Saturdays 3, 10, 17, 24 June & 1 July 2017

Time: 10am to 12:30pm

This five week course, with artist Donna Lewis, will cover Manga drawing, techniques and specialist equipment.

This course is designed for beginners and children with experience of drawing.

Each week, we will focus on different features and characters, and then apply these to your work-in-progress.

You will receive step-by-step instructions on how to design and create your characters, with helpful tips along the way.

In the final week, you will create a hand-drawn storyboard, using all of the elements and skills you have acquired during the course.

*As part of the course, you will receive a City Arts Drawing Pack.

Silk Suncatchers for Kids with Sarah Moorcroft

Time: 11am to 2pm

This is a great workshop, with artist Sarah Moorcroft, for children who want to learn how to work with silk.

You can use a set theme, or choose one of your own. There will also be the opportunity to add different embellishments to your suncatcher.

During the workshop you will learn the design process and practical application of silk painting. This technique involves planning your design on paper and then transferring it to your silk, guttering up the design and then allowing it to dry. You will then paint your silk, having learnt which colours work well together and how to apply them.

Age: 10+
