Art Courses for 2018 at City Arts

Atmospheric Landscapes & Seascapes in Pastels with Kevin Scully (3days)

Wednesday 29th, Thursday 30th, Friday 31st August, 10am – 4pm

This 3 day course explores the various ways that soft pastels can be used in conjunction with other traditional mediums such as ink, watercolour and gouache, to create fresh and lively pictures.

The basic principles of drawing in pastels and the various techniques that can be employed in their use are investigated through demonstration and one-to-one tuition.

Pastel is a versatile medium that can be used to create detailed drawings as well as lively, spontaneous ‘paintings’. Colour harmony and composition will feature strongly in our investigation of this exciting medium.

There will be plenty of opportunity for experimentation using a variety of materials and a range of different surfaces.

Age: Adults
Cost: £170 (including 3 days & all materials)

Breakdown Screen Printing 2wk Course with Sue Crook

Wednesday 1st & 8th August, 6pm – 8pm

Create some interesting abstract patterns onto fabric using ‘Breakdown Printing’ with Procion dyes, in this two week evening course with Sue Crook.

During our first session, we will prepare the textured screen, using thickened dye and suitable plastic inserts – e.g. bubblewrap, plastic mesh.

This will be left to dry over the intervening week and, once the inserts are removed, there will be beautiful patterns, shapes and textures remaining.

We will then print onto the fabric and scarf during our second session. Initially, the dried print paste will act as a resist but, as we apply more, it will slowly dissolve and ‘breakdown’ – providing some interesting abstract patterns, each one being different from the last.

Age: Teens & Adults (unsupervised)
Cost: £60 (for both weeks, including all materials)
